Is food only a source of nutrients, or is there more about food?

If you think about it: if a guy wants to spend some time with a girl, he asks her out for what? dinner?
If you want to thank someone, you invite them for dinner (or lunch).
How does you and your family spend time together? Sunday lunch?

I would like to know scientifically what the effects are of eating in terms of gasto intestinal system. Is perhaps food nutritional beyond the organic/inorganic compounds our physiological existance need? Maybe phycologically "nutrients" comes along with feeding in the case of humans?
